This week teams of Fremont Unified School District (FUSD) students will join over 300 students from across the country competing in the Invention Convention U.S. Nationals at The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation in Dearborn, Michigan. The competition begins June 1, and closes with an awards ceremony on June 3.

"The reason we like to participate in The Invention Convention is that it teaches design thinking and the engineering process," said Kathryn Straub, a 5th grade teacher at Vallejo Mill Elementary who has supported students to participate in this competition for four years. "There are steps to solving problems starting with empathy. Students learn how to look for problems, ideate or brainstorm ideas to solve a problem, and test their ideas using an engineering model."

Following the California Invention Convention, 17 students from FUSD were among 84 California inventors invited to compete in the National Invention Convention:

Azevada Elementary student Adira Mishra will travel to the Invention Convention U.S. Nationals.

“All of us in Fremont Unified are proud of our students who qualified for the Invention Convention U.S. Nationals, and wish those traveling to Michigan a fun and rewarding experience,” said FUSD Superintendent CJ Cammack. “All the students who participated — whether in local, state or national competitions — represent the curiosity, creativity and innovation our educators strive to inspire in each student.”

Harvey Green Elementary School 3rd grader Vennela Attili is traveling to the Invention Convention U.S. Nationals.

Participating students submitted a prototype and video presentation of their invention, an inventor’s logbook, and a poster outlining the invention process.

"They design, build a prototype, test, reiterate to make improvements, test again, and present a solution," said Straub. "The classroom culture soon becomes one of problem solvers. They look for problems and are challenged to solve them. Our future depends on problem solvers."

While not every eligible inventor was able to travel to Michigan for the Nationals, student inventors from Harvey Green, Azevada, Gomes and Vallejo Mill elementary schools confirmed they were making the journey this week.

Select finalists from the national competition will be invited to the virtual Invention Convention Globals 2022 on August 26, 2022.

Azevada Elementary student Shrey Karmacharya will travel to the Invention Convention U.S. Nationals.

FUSD students from Azevada, Chadbourne, Gomes, Green, Hirsch and Vallejo Mill elementary schools, and American and Mission San Jose high schools, competed at the California Invention Convention with over 250 inventors from across California.

Gomes Elementary 6th grader Daksha Ravindhar received one of 12 2022 Industry Focus Awards at the state competition; these winners are chosen by independent judges in each category with interest and/or expertise in that area. Ravindhar’s invention, Solar Cook, relies on renewable solar energy to prepare food, and was chosen as winner in the Energy category.

Five FUSD students also received 2022 Merit Awards, which are given to students whose inventions judges deem to be exemplary for their grade and age:
