Board Meeting Summary - July 28, 2021 (Special Meeting)

At its July 28th special meeting, The FUSD Board of Education:

 

Approved Administrative Appointments:

  • American High School Assistant Principal - Zahra Pelayo - Pelayo began her career in Fremont Unified as a teacher at Cabrillo Elementary where she served as a member of the leadership team and principal designee. Additionally, she was the school's nominee for Teacher of the Year. Most recently, Pelayo taught 6th-grade at Warwick Elementary. In this role she served as the curriculum and instruction liaison and an induction mentor to support new teachers. 
  • Washington High School Assistant Principal - Jeffery Alves – Dr. Alves began his career in Newark Unified School District as a U.S. History and World History teacher. Dr. Alves transitioned to Fremont Unified in 2013 at Mission San Jose High School and has been teaching U.S. History and Civics, as well as serving as the Social Science department chair and WASC chair. Dr. Alves worked with Human Resources in evaluating the Peer Evaluation program and he has worked extensively with the Curriculum and Instruction department on the Civics curriculum planning team. 

FUSD COVID-19 Safety Plan (CSP) Update and Approval – At its July 21, 2021, Board meeting, staff presented information to the Board of Education regarding plans for the 2021-2022 school year including updated COVID-19 mitigation measures aligned with newly published state guidance, as well as plans for virtual academies for students (distance learning programs). The Alameda County Public Health Department and California Department of Public Health continue to make adjustments to the guidance and regulations related to returning students to campus for in-person instruction. Guidelines from CDPH were released in recent weeks, and have since been revised. FUSD will work closely with ACPH to determine most appropriate and recommended health and safety measures. Staff recommends the Board receive updated information and approve the 2021-2022 FUSD COVID-19 Safety Plan (CSP).

Approved First Reading the Revised Board Policy 6158, Independent Study, and Review Administrative Regulation - Since the last update in 2016, there have been changes to California Education Code that should be reflected in Board Policy 6158. Changes include:

  • A new elementary virtual academy for the 2021-2022 school year has been established. 
  • Include daily interaction
  • Synchronous instruction
  • Tiered Re- Engagement strategies
  • Notification to parents if students not participating
  • Students may opt back in to in-person instruction and LEA must place within 5 school days

Changes to the Board Policy have been made according to Fremont Unified School District current procedures. This policy will align to AB130.
