    GATE Information 2017-18

Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) provides differentiated instruction for students with superior ability and high-level academic performance.

All grade three students will have the opportunity to be tested for GATE. The process is automatic and does not require parents to initiate it. Any student whose parent does not want them to participate in testing must submit an opt-out letter to the Assessment and Accountability office, 4210 Technology Drive, Fremont, California, 94538, no later than January 15, 2018. Letters submitted after the deadline will not be accepted.

Students in grades four or five who are new to Fremont Unified School District and have not been tested in Fremont have the option to be tested. If your 4th or 5th grade child is new to the district this year, and you would like them to be assessed with the GATE test, please submit a letter with the request to the Assessment and Accountability office by January 15, 2018.

If a grade three student was opted out of FUSD testing and the parent wishes their child to participate as a 4th or 5th grader, the parent must write a letter to the Assessment and Accountability office, 4210 Technology Drive, Fremont, California, 94538, indicating their wish for their child to test. Fifth grade is the last opportunity for students to opt in for the GATE test. If a student does not take the assessment, they are not eligible for the professional judgement process described below. The deadline for this is January 15, 2018.

Students in grades five or six who have been tested and were not identified may be nominated for GATE identification through the professional judgement process.  Teacher and/or Parent Nomination Forms are accepted for review under “other identification criteria.” Additional information and forms are available in the student's school office and may also be downloaded from the Gifted and Talented (GATE) Department website.

If a parent believes their child may require GATE services and is in the 5th or 6th grade, they must submit a completed Nomination Form to the Curriculum and Instruction Department, 4210 Technology Drive, Fremont, California, 94538 between November 1, 2017 and January 15, 2018.

Donate Unopened Hotel Toiletries   -  November 27th  to December 1st  at MSJE

Abode Services of Fremont provides emergency shelter to homeless men, women, and children in our community. An easy way we can help them is by donating unopened hotel toiletries—those little shampoo, conditioner, and lotion bottles you may have brought home from your vacation or business trip and that are now sitting unused in a cabinet or drawer. These toiletries can be given to the people who come to the shelters who often have not had access to facilities to bathe and care for themselves. Do you or your coworkers have unopened toiletries that you can donate? Toiletries that are needed include: shampoo, conditioner, hand/body lotion, soap, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrushes, dental floss, razors, shaving cream, combs, makeup, and mending kits. If you do not have any of the hotel size toiletries and still want to contribute, you can purchase toiletries, wash cloths, or socks to donate. (Full size products are welcome too.) If you are able to donate any of these items, please send them to school with your child. We will collect the donated toiletries at MSJE each school day during the last week of November only. (If you travel during the Thanksgiving break, please save unopened hotel toiletries for us.) Thank you for helping the homeless.

    Late Lunches:

If you child forgets lunch you may drop off lunch in the bins outside the office by 11:00 a.m.  If your child’s lunch is not here by 11:00, they will have to “charge” a lunch and parents will have to reimburse the cafeteria the next day.   Please DO NOT put glass containers in your student’s lunch boxes. We have already had several accidents with glass this year. Having a glass container at school is a real safety hazard.

    Office Deliveries:

Parents must sometimes leave books, homework, projects etc. in the office for students. Please remind your student to check in the office to see if forgotten items have been delivered to school. In an effort to not disrupt instructional time, messages are ONLY delivered directly to students in EMERGENCIES. The following are not considered emergencies.

    1. Lunch money, books, homework, projects, personal items, etc.
    2. Transportation arrangements must be made in advance.

    Reminders about Independent Study Contracts:

    Per Board Policy 6158:

    • Short term voluntary Independent Study (IS) Contracts may extend for not less than five (5) and not more than (10) consecutive school days.
    • Students may only have one (1) IS per school year.
    • Students may only have three (3) in their entire K-12 school experience in FUSD.
    • Students whose achievement is below grade level standards, based on multiple measures, in Language Arts or Math may not be eligible for IS.
    • No Independent Study contracts are issued the first twenty (20) days of the school year or the last twenty (20) days of the school year.
    • Students who do not successfully complete the assigned work from a previous Independent Study will not be eligible for another IS.
    • Teachers must be given at least 10 days’ notice to prepare the material for an IS.

    Change of Address/Residency:

Please be reminded that it is the responsibility of parents under Board Policy 5111 to notify the school office within five (5) days if they move in or out of the attendance area.  Any move within the attendance area still requires four (4) new proofs of residency to verify the new address.  Failure to do so will result in revocation of the student’s placement at the school.

Parent Meetings for 2018-2019 Elementary Enrollment:

Student Support Services is hosting 2018-2019 Elementary Enrollment Information meetings on December 4th, 5th, and 6th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the District Office, 4210 Technology Drive, in the Professional Development Center. We encourage families to attend the information meeting to understand the enrollment process and to have your questions answered. If you are unable to attend an Information Meeting, we will post Powerpoint slides of the presentation on the enrollment page following the meetings.

    On behalf of all students,

    Principal Graves

Remember to read the Announcements and Headlines on the web page too.  Additional information is posted there as it comes up on a day to day basis.
