To Parents and Students:
Welcome to the 2017-18 school year. Mission Valley ROP and our business partners continue to make major investments in our program. You can see it when walking into room 72 which has been transformed into a mini-data center/cybersecurity sandbox, which leads me to the Internet of Things. The Internet of Things (IoT), is defined as "the network of physical objects, devices, vehicles, buildings and other items which are embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and network connectivity, which enables these objects to collect and exchange data." The rapid proliferation of this technology such as mobile, social and cloud computing provides personal and economic benefits. Cisco Systems Inc., estimates the IoT will consist of 50 billion devices connected to the Internet by 2020. However, with the rapid growth of technology comes increased vulnerability and at the same time opportunities.
There is a severe shortage of personal to fill the current demand for security professionals as noted in Burning Glass Technologies “Job Market Intelligence: Cybersecurity Jobs, 2015” report. You might also be interested in reading a comprehensive study from Global Knowledge; 2017 IT Skillls and Salary Report, and finally, Ten Reasons You Should Consider a Career in Cybersecurity. This shortage has resulted in increased emphasis and efforts to stimulate interest at middle and high school levels through sponsored online competitions such as Cisco NetRiders; the Air Force Association’s CyberPatriot. and CyberWatchWest whose mission reads,"...to increase the quantity and quality of the Cybersecurity workforce throughout the western United States." A recent article in PCWorld titled "How to Become an Ethical Hacker," outlines the education, certification and experience needed to become an ethical hacker otherwise known as a "white hat" hacker. Two of the basic certifications noted in this article can be taken as a result of the courses offered here at Irvington by those students who successfully complete the course work.
In my class we will be using SchoolLoop for assignments and grades. Each student must have their own SchoolLoop account where they can monitor their progress daily. I encourage you to also register on SchoolLoop where you can monitor your student’s progress.I do my best to keep SchoolLoop current, I would ask you to contact me by e-mail for the latest up-to-date status of your daughter or son's progress. Should you have any questions or concerns at any time, contact me at the e-mail address above. It is my preferred method of contact.
Hoping you have a good day...
