Kindergarten Admission FAQ
Distribution of Registration Packets
Q. How does the process work?
A. The process is the same at all FUSD schools. However, it is managed completely at each school site. Therefore, FUSD will always send you back to your home school. If this FAQ does not answer your questions, please contact the school office at 656-5242 for more information.
There are 3 steps for registration:
* Pick up registration packet in December
* Registration - in mid-January
The school accept registration forms on a specific date in January. This date is determined by the district office. Schools are notified of the date in December. If there are more children registering on this date than the available openings, a lottery is held the following day.
*Dates to be determined by the district office.
Q. What is involved?
A. The school will distribute registration packets beginning in early December. The date to begin distribution is determined by the district office. You will gather all the documents listed in the packet and fill out all of the forms required to be ready for registration day.
Q. Where do I get the registration packet from?
A. The packet is school site specific. It is available from your home school. Since the various forms are color coded for the convenience of the parents and the school staff, it is not possible to provide the forms on the school website.
Q. When can I pick up the registration packet?
A. The packet will be available for pick up from the school office between 8:00 and 4:00. The date to begin distribution is determined by the district office. It is usually the beginning of December.
Q. What information will I need to fill out the forms?
A. There is nothing in the forms that you would not know or already have!! The forms ask you about your child's name and address, parent/guardian (person who has legal custody of the child - the parent/guardian should reside within the Chadbourne attendance area) information, your child's health information, and any special needs your child may have.
Q. Do I need to make any decision while filling out the registration forms?
A. You have an opportunity to provide your preference of the session you want your child to attend. There are two kindergarten sessions at Chadbourne: AM session is 8:15am - 11:35am and the PM session is 11:35am - 2:55pm. Please note that this is only a preference. The child's session is determined based on multiple factors as explained on the preference form.
Q. When does registration start and when does it end?
A. Open registration begins in mid-January. The date is determined by the district office. From that date forward, registration is continuous.

Q. What is the "kindergarten lottery"?
A. Kindergarten Lottery is an unfortunate reality we have to deal with. The three kindergarten classes at Chadbourne can accommodate 80 students. Sometimes some children are not ready to go to the first grade at the end of the year and are retained in kindergarten. That reduces the number of available spaces. Siblings of current Chadbourne students grades K - 5 have priority when registering for kindergarten. Once the siblings have completed registration, the remaining seats are for new registrations. Quite often, there are more non-sibling children than the available seats. In this case, the district holds a lottery where the principal, a parent representative and a district official randomly select names to determine which students will have a space at Chadbourne and the order of the overload list.
Q. When do I know if there will be a kindergarten lottery?
A. We should know by the end of the first day of open registration if we will have to participate in the lottery.
Q. How many siblings register?
A. There is no way for the school to know ahead of time. It is typical that half of the spaces are filled by siblings.
Q. What if my child does not get into Chadbourne?
A. Your child will come to Chadbourne for the first 10 days of school. During the second week of school the principals meet at the district office with the Director of Elementary Education to determine available spaces within the district. Based on that information the Director of Elementary Education determines the best placement for the students to be overloaded.
Q. Can I provide my preferences of alternative schools at any time during registration process?
A. Unfortunately no. The student is placed based the available spaces and determination of the Director of Elementary Education.
Q. Is there anything I can do to increase the chances my child will go to Chadbourne? For example, if I do not indicate any preference between AM/PM session...
A. There is nothing that can "increase" your chance to attend Chadbourne. Placement is determined by date and time of registration.
Q. If my child ends up attending an overload school, when will he/she return to Chadbourne?
A. It is always the goal of the school to bring back overloaded students the following school year if they have not returned during the current school year. Most years we are successful.
Q. Will my child be able to go to Chadbourne if there is a vacancy during the year? Does this ever happen?
A. Yes, if a space becomes available during the school year before January 30th, you will be called and asked to return. In order to be contacted after January 30th, you must submit a letter to the office stating this request.
