Walters has a wide range of elective classes.  We currently offer Arts & Crafts, AVID 7, AVID 8, Band, Choir, Drama, Drawing & Painting, Foods, Leadership, Newspaper, Spanish 1, Spanish 2, and Yearbook.  Students are given the chance to choose electives that have a special interest to them. Each semester students have a new elective except for AVID, Band and Spanish. The electives classes support the academic classes and give students the opportunity to put theory into practical application.

ART
Art students are exposed to a the experience of working with different mediums.  Students study drawing, color theory, the principles of art, the elements of art and arts and crafts.

BAND
Walters Jr. High School Band is not only a class but a strong representation of musical talent in this area.  We are a performing group with at least 2-5 performances a year.  One of those performances usually includes a music festival where the band students are adjudicated on their performance to earn a rating of gold, silver or bronze.  WJHS Band students are serious about improving their abilities in areas of note reading, rhythm study, and further exploration of other musical areas such as composers and viewing live performances.  WJHS band also really enjoys performing.  Band students join band for the entire year.Typical band instruments are accepted however some exceptions are made depending on circumstance.  WJHS Band is not a beginners group however beginners are accepted depending on circumstance and it is expected that beginners work extremely hard.

CHOIR
Choir is a beginners performance class with at least 2-5 performances a year.  One of those performances usually includes a music festival where the band students are adjudicated on their performance to earn a rating of gold, silver or bronze.  Choir is a semester elective but it is strongly encouraged that the student stay in choir for the entire year.  Choir students learn everything from note values and note names to performance techniques and expectations.  The choir literature is kept appropriate and broadens the students horizons.

DRAMA
The Drama class gives students an opportunity to pretend and play through a variety of cross-curricular activities.  Students study plays as literature, create performance-based stories to perform, and study theater as an art form.  The class involves a variety of activities ranging from pantomimes to newscasts,  mask-making and storytelling to stage production.  The students perform in front of an audience.  It's a great place for students to develop self-confidence in a trust-filled, supportive environment.

FOODS
In our foods class this year we will learn about the basics of cooking and nutrition. The food pyramid, nutrients and evaluating food labels will be explored as the relate to making healthy food choices within a budget.  Students will be given opportunities to practice skills in measuring, reading recipes, (math, science skills)  following directions, (Literature, and team work)  food preparation, safety and sanitation, and meal service etiquette.  Students will work independently and in groups to complete labs making healthy snacks, breakfast foods and quick and easy meals.  We will learn about foods of different cultures and various regions of the United States. (Social Studies)

LEADERSHIP
In leadership, students will be on an adventure of self exploration, skill development and team building.  Students also assist in planning and host many school activities.

NEWSPAPER
Walters' newspaper class publishes a weekly newspaper, created entirely by students.  The paper is delivered to every student free of charge and includes news, sports and a peer advice column.

SPANISH 1
¿Quieres aprender español? Students can take Spanish 1, a year-round course that explores Spanish grammar and vocabulary as well as Hispanic culture in the United States and abroad.  Remember that speaking, listening, reading and writing in Spanish are course expectations. But we also make piñatas, celebrate holidays, examine works of art, and learn about Spanish speaking countries and people!

SPANISH 2
¡Ya sabes español! Students who are successful in year one may enroll in Spanish 2 the following academic year. It is another year-round course that begins with a review of content previously learned. The year progresses with further development of all aspects of the Spanish language and Spanish/Hispanic culture. When the academic criteria is met students may move on to higher levels of Spanish in high school and beyond!

YEARBOOK
Yearbook students take pictures and write stories throughout the year.  In March, these are sent to a publisher who prints them in a hard cover book for delivery in June.  Students are responsible for promoting sales and creating the entire book.
