Board of Education Approves Lower Class Sizes, Counselors, and Student Support Services

At the March 13, 2013 meeting, the Board of Education took unanimous action to add staff and provide support for students, staff, and families for next school year including:

  • The addition of 10 Counselor positions.
  • The reduction of kindergarten class size from 30:1 to 28:1 with a plan to further decrease K-3 class sizes down to 24:1 in future years.
  • The addition of approximately 10 secondary teaching positions to reduce class sizes and change current staffing allocations at secondary schools from the current 28:1 to 27.5:1.
  • The addition of 3 Assistant Principal positions at our largest elementary schools (Forest Park, Warm Springs, and Ardenwood) to better support students, staff and parents.

Funding for future years remains uncertain because the Governor’s budget proposal, while promising additional funding for education, has not yet been passed by the legislature.  Despite the uncertainty, our Board Members were unanimous in their commitment to add additional staff now so schools can plan schedules and provided parents and students greater certainty about services, schedules and classes for next year.
