Independent Study

Objective:

The student will complete the courses of study listed below during the semester as they are outlined in the Fremont Unified School District course descriptions. All course objectives will be consistent with the established District guidelines. Assignment and Work-Record forms will include additional descriptions of the major objectives and activities of the course of study covered by the agreement and the methods for evaluating student work. It is understood that:
  • Independent study is a voluntary, optional alternative in which no pupil may be required to participate; a classroom alternative is always be available for your child.
  • The purpose of this agreement is to enable the student to successfully reach the objectives and complete the assignments identified in the Master Contract or assignment and Work-Record forms that will be part of this agreement
  • The maximum time a student may be on independent study is 10 days.
  • FUSD and the teacher will provide all materials necessary to complete the assignment.
  • All assigned work is due on the student's scheduled date of return in accordance with the independent study contract. If your student is absent on the expected date of return, their work must still be turned in on time. Illness, further travel, or other reasons will not excuse the student from having his/her work in on time according to this contract. Failure to meet this requirement will result in no credit on their work and unexcused absences for the period the student is gone.

Procedure:

  1. Parent notifies the appropriate student service clerk that they wish to complete an independent study contract. In this letter you should include the first date of the absence, the last day of the absence, and the date of return. Please allow us 2 weeks to process independent study contracts.
  2. Student will bring this letter to room 322 for the independent study coordinator to create a new contract.
  3. Parents and student must sign the contract.
  4. Independent study assignment records are distributed to the student's teachers. Teachers return the assignment record to the independent study coordinator.
  5. Before departing the student will make sure they have received all of their assignments from the independent study coordinator (room 322) and understand what is being expected.
  6. When the student returns, all work must be delivered to the independent study coordinator in room 322. Failure to return these materials on the due date will negate the independent study contract.
  7. All IS work will be turned out to teachers for grading.
  8. All records due to coordinator. Coordinator finalizes contract and submits to attendence.
  9. Student Service Secretary then enters corrected attendence.
