Principals Message

Thank you for visiting the Mattos Website.  Mattos Elementary School is located in the Centerville District of Fremont in the Glenmoor neighborhood.  Mattos has a great heritage extending over fifty years, and many of the parents of our students attended here.  We have a very strong and hard working team of staff, parents, and volunteers.  As the principal, I am committed to promoting active participation and supporting all members of our school community in order to achieve academic excellence.

Mattos is an exciting place to work and learn.
We follow the state and district adopted curriculum and standards diligently and constantly strive to do our job even better.  We have the only elementary Science Magnet Program in Fremont Unified School District that has been built over many years and continues to provide our campus with an innovative focus on science.  The purpose of the program is to integrate more science into every aspect of our students’ school day as well as use our Science Lab and our own weather station.  Students are allowed to transfer into the magnet program through the Science Magnet intra-district transfer process.

Our active Parent Teachers’ Association (PTA) and our Science Committee play a significant role at our school.  Their active commitment and support helps us to accomplish many things we could not do alone.  They provide many activities, materials, and equipment for our school.  They also sponsor a variety of events such as our incredible Fall Family Festival, fundraising, provide new technology for the classrooms, schedule science assemblies, gardening, and pay for our onsite counselor.

Every teacher uses intervention activities and strategies within the classroom to ensure that our students meet grade level standards.  We also provide intervention programs during the school day and beyond that are computer intervention classes for both reading and math.  Programs such as Accelerated Reader and Read Naturally are used to help increase the reading fluency and comprehension of our students.  Also, our ST Math program assists students in practicing and learning their grade level math skills and standards.

Our school provides several Special Education services and programs to support each student.  These include:  Speech and Language, Resource Specialist Program, and four Special Day Classes from K-6 grades.  We also have a part time School Psychologist, Itinerant Adapted P.E. Specialist, and Occupational Therapist, who provide the appropriate services for specific students.  In addition, GATE students are placed in cluster classrooms at their grade level, which is taught by a GATE certified teacher and are given challenging projects along with activities to enhance their learning.

Other fun activities that help our students become well-rounded both socially and academically include:  the Chess Club, Cub Scouts, Brownies, Mad Science, Fremont Education After School Band program, boys’ and girls’ Basketball, Student Council, and our Junior Safety Patrol.  Our Accelerated Reader Program requires students to read throughout the school year and prizes are awarded to students by Mrs. Baeza, our Library Media Technician and the PTA.

Furthermore, we use the district adopted H3 Character Education Program at our school.  Mattos has a monthly character trait such as responsibility and respect for others.  Teachers and staff give students “character coupons” for showing and using these traits.  Every Friday there is a drawing to award prizes to certain students who turn in their coupons.  Finally, we are involved in school-wide service learning projects for those less fortunate, especially during the holidays.  This year, our service learning focus is on “Saving Our Planet,” which includes recycling, protecting the environment, saving habitats and species, conserving energy, and properly disposing waste materials.

Please feel free to contact me via e-mail at teglinton@fremont.k12.ca.us about our school or any of its programs.  Let’s work together to have a wonderful school year!
