Service to the community is a graduation requirement. You must have 40 hours of documented service by the end of the third quarter of your senior year in order to graduate.
- These 40 hours can be earned at any time, starting with your freshman year.
- Students do not need to earn 10 hours each year
- Service hours performed during the summer between 8th and 9th grade do not count.
- Students can not get paid for these hours
- Students can turn in forms for their service hours, as the hours are completed -- even if it is just for one hour of work.
- Volunteer work can be done in other countries, but the company organizing the volunteer work must be based in the US and have a US office that can be contacted to confirm hours.
Service Overview
Use the criteria below to fulfill your service to the community:
- Your service must benefit the community at large.
- You must do your service with a non-profit organization.
- Your service cannot promote a religion.
- The supervisor of your service cannot be a parent unless they are employed by a non-profit organization.
- If you are tutoring you must be supervised by a teacher or administrator.
THE FOLLOWING IS NOT ACCEPTABLE WHEN COMPLETING YOUR SERVICE HOURS:
- Any for profit company or organization.
- Drama/Tech. class (there are some exceptions. See your teacher or Mr. Breazeale)
- Band (there are some exceptions. See your teacher or Mr. Breazeale)
- Choir (there are some exceptions. See your teacher or Mr. Breazeale)
- Sports, as a player.
- Tutoring at for profit companies.

Required Forms
Complete all of the forms in this packet in detail. Please write a full and detailed explanation of where and what you are doing for your service hours. When you are ready to turn in your completed service project, turn in all forms. You may print these forms, or you may save them, and then open and complete using Adobe Acrobat. If you complete the forms using Acrobat, save and print a copy to turn in.
You MUST also turn in the 4th requirement, a REFLECTION (A typed summary reflecting upon your experience. Answer these questions in your reflection: What did you learn? Do you believe you provided meaningful service? Would you do this service again? ). So, you will turn in FOUR forms (all at once, stapled) to complete your Service Project.
***Make a copy of your forms before you turn them in. Keep these copies for your records.
